What Are the Chakras?

The seven chakras are spiral of energy located vertically along the spine that act as transfer stations for the body’s vital life force energy, or prana. Each center is associated with specific physical, emotional, and spiritual qualities.

When chakras are balanced and flowing freely, we tend to feel grounded, centered, and deeply connected to ourselves and the world around us.

But when one or more centers become blocked or imbalanced, it can lead to a range of physical, mental, and emotional challenges.

Exploring the 7 Major Chakras

Let’s take a closer look at each of the seven primary chakras, their associated traits, and signs of imbalance:

1. Root Chakra (Muladhara)
Located at the base of the spine, the root chakra is associated with our basic needs, feelings of safety, and connection to the physical world.
When balanced, we feel grounded, secure, and able to meet our survival needs. Signs of imbalance include:
  • Chronic fatigue or low energy
  • Financial instability or issues with money
  • Difficulty making decisions or feeling indecisive
  • Lack of motivation or drive
2. Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)

Situated just below the navel, the sacral chakra governs our creativity, sexuality, and emotional expression.

A balanced sacral chakra allows us to fully embrace life’s pleasures and flow with our feelings. Imbalances may show up as:

  • Reproductive or pelvic health issues
  • Feelings of shame, guilt, or emotional repression
  • Difficulty connecting with or expressing emotions
  • Struggles with addictive behaviors
3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)

Located in the upper abdomen, the solar plexus chakra is the center of personal power, self-esteem, and decision-making.

When this chakra is balanced, we feel confident, resilient, and able to take action. Signs of an imbalance include:

  • Digestive problems or issues with the metabolism
  • Difficulty setting boundaries or saying “no”
  • Chronic anxiety, stress, or overwhelm
  • Struggle with control or micromanagement tendencies
4. Heart Chakra (Anahata)

In the center of the chest, the heart chakra governs love, compassion, and our ability to connect with others.

 A balanced heart chakra allows us to give and receive love freely. Imbalances may manifest as:

  • Digestive problems or issues with the metabolism
  • Difficulty setting boundaries or saying “no”
  • Chronic anxiety, stress, or overwhelm
  • Struggle with control or micromanagement tendencies

5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

Located in the throat, this chakra is associated with communication, self-expression, and our ability to speak our truth.

When balanced, we feel heard, understood, and able to articulate our thoughts and feelings. Signs of imbalance include:

  • Chronic sore throats, thyroid issues, or neck tension
  • Difficulty communicating clearly or speaking up for ourselves
  • Tendency to be a people-pleaser or avoid confrontation
  • Struggles with creativity or expressing ourselves
6. Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

Situated in the center of the forehead, the third eye chakra governs intuition, imagination, and our connection to spiritual wisdom.

A balanced third eye allows us to access our inner guidance and see the big picture. Imbalances may show up as:

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Feeling disconnected from our intuition or inner voice
  • Excessive daydreaming or lack of focus
  • Headaches, sinus issues, or eye strain
7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)

At the top of the head, the crown chakra is the gateway to divine consciousness and our connection to something greater than ourselves.

When balanced, we feel a profound sense of purpose, peace, and oneness. Signs of imbalance include:

  • Feeling detached from the physical world or our bodies
  • Difficulty finding meaning or purpose in life
  • Preoccupation with the spiritual realm to the exclusion of practical matters
  • Sense of isolation or disconnect from others
